The Kai Ehitu Outrigger Team will host the Papa Kimitete Regatta at 8 a.m. Saturday at Kailua Pier.
The regatta, which kicks off the Moku O Hawaii Outrigger Canoe Racing Association season, offers food booths, craft vendors, silent auctions and raffles.

set for Saturday
Ohana Sportfishing Adventures’ first annual Dog Days of Summer Charity Fishing Tournament will take place Saturday in West Hawaii waters.

Konawaena spring football season
to start Monday
Konawaena spring football for players currently in grades nine to 11 will begin Monday and run through May 31 at the high school.
Participants must have current physical examination and parental consent forms on file at the school. Konawaena will administer physical examinations at 3 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $20.

Physical exam screenings
at Keaau High
Keaau High will offer physical examination screenings for all high school and middle school athletes from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday in its high school gym.
Students must bring completed physical examination forms to the screenings, which will cover athletic participation for the entire 2013-14 season. Adults must accompany students under the age of 14.
Forms are available at any high school athletics office, and the cost for the screenings is $25.

Pueo golf
tournament Sunday
Pueo, a Waimea-based Hawaii Kupuna Softball League team, will host its annual fundraising golf tournament at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course.

Big Island All-Stars camp May 25-27
The 2013 Big Island All-Stars Honokaa Basketball Camp will be held May 25-27 at Honokaa’s Parks and Recreation gym.
The camp is for children who just completed kindergarten through eighth grade. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the gym on May 25 for those in kindergarten through third grade (or 8 years old and younger) and at noon for grades four through eight (age 9 and older).
Sessions start at 8:30 a.m. for the first age group and 1 p.m. for the second.
Pick up applications from Anna Muranaka at the Parks and Recreation gym or Daphne Honma at the Honokaa High and Intermediate School. The camp fee of $50 includes instruction, a T-shirt and a basketball. Make checks payable to Big Island All-Stars and write “Honokaa Basketball Camp” in the memo.
Mail a completed application form and the camp fee to: Daphne Honma, P.O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI 96776. The deadline to mail in applications is Friday. Camp organizers will accept walk-ins. Each session is limited to 90 applicants.

c May 25: Session I (K-3) 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Session II (grade 4-8) 1 to 4:30 p.m.
c May 26: Session I 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Session II 1 to 4:30 p.m.
c May 27: Session I 8:30 12 p.m.; Session II, 1 to 4:30 p.m. At 11:45 a.m., an awards ceremony will be held for K-3 and at 4:15 p.m. one will be held for grades four through eight.
This year the camp will sell Domino’s Pizza (cheese or pepperoni) for $2 per slice between noon and 1 p.m. as well as drinks for $1 every day.

Kukio Challenge
June 2 at Kukio Bay
The 12th annual Kukio Challenge will take place at 9 a.m. June 2.
The race features a half-mile swim, three-mile run, and a two-mile paddleboard/stand-up paddleboard course.
Athletes age 14 and older may register for the event, which is limited to 100 entrants.
The cost is $65, and athletes must register online at kukio.net by 3 p.m. May 31. Participants may register on race day for $75.
Proceeds benefit the Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai, a group that aims to ensure protection of the natural, cultural and scenic resources of Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona.

College-prep hoops camp June 3-7
Hawaii Island Hoops will hold its college-prep basketball camp June 3-7 at the Kekuaokalani Gym. Registration is ongoing. The camp includes Nike SPARQ Training, daily fundamental training workouts, shooting clinics, defensive breakdowns, team offense, individual skills competitions, team tournament and championship game. There will also be a 3-point shootout, free-throw and slam dunk contests, all-star games and awards ceremony.
The camp is open to boys ages 13-19 who are looking to improve their skills and learn a college-style program. The registration fee is $350 and includes instruction from NCAA, NAIA and junior college players and coaches, and evening college-prep seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment. All meals are included in the registration fee.

Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp in July
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars are sponsoring the inaugural Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp for boys and girls ages 9 to 17 set for July 31 through Aug. 3.
Named in honor of the former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who helped guide the various camps and clinics around the Big Island, the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp will take place July 31 through Aug. 3 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and other Hilo gyms. Instruction and drills will be conducted throughout the day, and games will be played at night.
Players who register by July 15 may register for $60. Late enrollment is $70. All enrollees will receive a camp shirt and a group photo.
Bill O’Rear, a former Vulcan star and a UH-Hilo Hall of Fame member, is the lead clinician. Various guest clinicians will be announced at a later date. Parks Director Clayton Honma will serve as the camp director.
Registration forms are available during normal business hours at the Parks and Recreation office located in Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani Street in Hilo. Make checks payable to the Big Island All-Stars and include the note “Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp.”

Beginner golf
classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning Saturday.
The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf. Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

HIBT fishes
for volunteers
The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is looking for more than 50 volunteers to help with the running of the 54th annual tournament. A variety of tournament support is needed, including Kailua Pier operations, HIBT retail store, administration and a whole lot more. Each volunteer will receive a HIBT T-shirt and discounted parking for shift volunteers. Positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
HIBT event headquarters, retail and tournament control will once again be anchored at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, located adjacent to Kailua Pier. Tournament volunteers are needed from July 21 through August 13.

camp June 6-7
Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross-country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic at Konawaena High June 6 and 7.
The clinic will begin at 10 a.m. both days, with clinic-day registration at 9 a.m. June 6.
The cost of the clinic is $100 for both days. Runners who register before Friday receive a $10 discount.

pro-am July 1-5
Mauna Kea Golf Course will host its 40th annual pro-am tournament July 1-5. The total cash purse prize for pro golfers is $10,000.
Entries are limited to the first 26 paid teams by May 25. Tournament entry fees are $8,700 per team of four or $2,900 per amateur. Entry fees include dinner functions (spouses included), amenity tournament gifts and prizes, and green and cart fees for two practice and three tournament rounds.
Special room rates for registered amateur players begin at $299 per night in a Mountain View category room at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Rates include complimentary daily breakfast for two. Golf professional rooms are complimentary for Monday through Friday nights.
Practice rounds will be July 1 and 2, and tournament play will begin July 3.

Acosta, Larson on Emily T. Gail Show
Ryan Acosta and Hunter Larson, who qualified for a U.S. Open sectional qualifier by taking the top two spots in the U.S. Open local qualifier on May 6, will be guests on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available under “lineup” at espnhawaii.com and as an iTunes podcast.
Acosta took first place, and Larson took second at the qualifier held May 6 at Kukio Golf & Beach Club.
Michael Patrick Shiels, a Michigan-based radio personality, will discuss the recent World Golf Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Shiels is the author of several books.
Also, Ed Kageyama, general manager of Kaanapali Golf Courses on Maui, will appear on the show. He has received many awards, including Golf Professional of the Year from the Aloha Section PGA and General Manager of the Year by Bill Casper Golf. He will discuss the HHSAA boys and girls golf championships held at Kaanapali earlier this month.
