Missing Kauai hiker, 72, found alive

KEKAHA, Kauai — A 72-year-old woman who was missing since setting off for a weekend Kauai hike was found Monday alive and in good condition, authorities said.

Pamela Wilcox Dohrman, of Hanalei, was found Monday off the Kaluapuhi Trail in Kokee State Park, county officials said. Aside from some signs of dehydration, she appeared to be in good condition. Rescuers were walking her out of the trail, and she was expected to be examined by medics.

Dohrman was reported missing Saturday after she didn’t return from hiking. Family members told officials she left her Kokee cabin that afternoon.

About three dozen searchers from various state and county agencies searched until Sunday evening, unable to find any sign of her. She was found several hours after the search resumed Monday morning. Up to 60 volunteers, including her family, helped with the search.

The county planned to use a helicopter in Monday’s search but wasn’t able to because of inclement weather. Volunteers split up into groups and covered the trails on foot, and one team found her off the Kaluapuhi Trail at around 11:30 a.m.

The trail is described as one of the flattest trails on the island and as an easy hike. The trail is 2.5 miles roundtrip. It passes through a moist forest where several native forest birds can be found, according to the park’s website. It was not clear which trail she set out to hike Saturday.

Pacific Wings ceasing Hawaii operations

HONOLULU — Pacific Wings, an airline serving five Hawaii destinations with a Cessna 208, is ceasing operations.

Hawaii News Now reported Monday that Pacific Wings will be shutting down its Hawaii operation in mid-June.

Pacific Wings has been in operation since the 1970s and serves mainly smaller markets like Molokai, Kalaupapa, Lanai, Hana and Waimea-Kamuela.

Now that Island Air is turning to large turboprops, Hawaii News Now says that leaves Mokulele Airlines as the only scheduled airline with planes small enough to serve some Hawaii airports.

Paddler critically injured

HONOLULU — A paddler was critically injured at an Oahu beach park this weekend.

According to Hawaii News Now, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon at Ala Moana Beach Park.

The 41-year-old man called for help on his cellphone after suffering an injury in the lineup.

Two surfers came to the man’s aid, and an Ocean Safety rescue crew was able to bring him to shore.

The man was taken to the trauma center in critical condition.

Trial continues in fatal Honolulu highway shooting

HONOLULU — The last of the prosecution’s witnesses will be testifying in the murder trial against the pastor’s son accused of going on a Honolulu highway shooting rampage, killing a mother of 10.

Trial resumes Monday, with a few more witnesses testifying for the prosecution. It’s not clear whether Toby Stangel will testify in his defense or if his attorney will call any witnesses.

Stangel is charged with murder, attempted murder and other crimes. Prosecutors say he killed a woman, injured two motorists and shot at two police officers during the early morning June 2011 shooting spree.

Jurors have heard testimony from witnesses including a daughter of the woman who died and the man and woman who were shot while driving on the H-1 freeway.

Flash flood warning as inches fall on Oahu hourly

HONOLULU — The National Weather Service declared a flash flood warning for Oahu during afternoon rains that pounded the island with an inch or more of water per hour.

Forecasters first said the warning would expire at 2:45 p.m. Sunday but extended it until 4:45 p.m. as rains continue to drench the area and Waikane and Waiahole streams swelled to flood levels.

The Department of Emergency Management urged residents and visitors to remain on high ground and not to try to cross high or fast-flowing water in vehicles or on foot.

The department said water several inches deep was reported on Kamahameha Highway at Waikane.

The warning expired without reports of major damages or injuries.
