A pedestrian died Friday night after he was apparently struck by a vehicle during inclement weather on Highway 11 in the Volcano area.
The man had apparently been wandering through traffic on the highway when Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded to the 7:40 p.m. call. When they arrived on scene, near mile marker 20, however, they found the man lying in the center of the highway after having been struck by a vehicle.
Rescue personnel described the man as middle aged with no signs of life. They initiated CPR and transported him to Hilo Medical Center, but reported no change in his condition.
The fire department said weather conditions at the time were poor with a light, misty rain and fog. There are also no streets light in the area.
Highway 11 was closed shortly thereafter. It reopened about 6 a.m. Saturday.
