Ethics board meets Wednesday in Hilo
The county Board of Ethics meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hawaii County Building, 25 Aupuni St., Hilo. Meetings are open to the public. The agenda is posted on the county’s website.

Tax workshop planned for farmers, ranchers
The University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources’ Risk Management Hawaii program offers a business tax workshop led by Michael Holl. This workshop will help Hawaii farmers and ranchers manage labor, financial and legal risks. Holl is a federally authorized tax practitioner, licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to negotiate with the IRS on behalf of taxpayers.
Holl will present information on these topics: business deductions; tax preparation and record keeping to minimize taxes and chances of an audit; business entities for a farm; how employment laws and independent contractor requirements affect business; how to obtain relief from 75 to 90 percent of federal penalties for violating independent contractor employment laws; and special provisions in the tax code regarding farm income averaging to significantly lower taxes resulting from bumper crops.
The workshop is offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Waimea Civic Center conference room; 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kainaliu Cooperative Extension Service conference room; and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 23 at the Pahala Community Center. Masunaga to speak
at Rotary meeting
Margaret Masunaga will speak at the Kona Sunrise Rotary club meeting scheduled from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona.
Masunaga is the deputy director of the county Department of Planning. Before this appointment, she served as a deputy attorney general for the state in the Attorney General’s Family Law Division in Kealakekua.
The Planning Department provides technical advice to the mayor, Planning Commission and County Council on all planning and land use matters. The department is also charged with the administration of the subdivision and zoning codes.

Traffic safety group meets Thursday
Kona Traffic Safety Committee meets at 5 p.m. Thursday. At the meeting, concerned community members will have an opportunity to meet with county and state officials who can help mitigate traffic safety problems.
The committee meets monthly in the community halau at the West Hawaii Community Center. Park in the makai lot next to Building G.
Kona Orchid Society sale this weekend
The Kona Orchid Society Annual Show and Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Old Kona Airport Park’s Makaeo Pavilion.
Admission is free. The event includes orchid vendors, arts and crafts vendors and free classes on orchid culture.

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. Proceeds from sales help support the needs of the Kona libraries, with funding for items such as educational and entertainment programs, community summer reading programs and magazine subscriptions. Volunteers are welcome; call 322-0077. The next sale is slated June 8.
Book donations are accepted Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the library’s garage area.
