One lane of Alii Drive has reopened following a lengthy closure because of downed utility poles fronting Banyans surf spot in North Kona.

Traffic will likely remain restricted to one lane through midnight between Royal Poinciana Drive and Lyman’s surf spot, according to the Hawaii Police Department. The road was reopened to one lane about 6:45 p.m.

Alii Drive was closed around 7 a.m. after a guide wire failed causing two utility poles to snap, according to the Hawaii Electric Light Co. The road closure is in effect at Alii Drive’s intersection with Royal Poinciana Drive and also at Lyman’s surf spot, according to the Hawaii Police Department. The incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m.

Utility crews remain on the scene. Motorists are advised to use caution when driving through the areas.
