KMS to perform Brahms’ ‘Requiem’
The Kona Music Society, conducted by Susan McCreary Duprey, will perform the Joachim Linckelman edition of Johannes Brahms’ “Requiem” for the first time on Hawaii Island. The performance begins at 4 p.m. May 19 at Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. The Kona Music Society Chorus will be joined by a 17-piece orchestra, soprano Chiho Villasenor and baritone Keene Ishii. Villasenor has performed with Hawaii Opera Theatre Chorus; Ishii is known for his solo performance with the KMS Chorus production of Handel’s “Messiah.”

One Island to host celebration of arts
A community celebration of the arts is planned May 24 to 26 at One Island Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau.
All visual and performing artists, including sculptors, painters, musicians, poets and dancers, may submit works for inclusion in the show by May 12. Submit a digital portfolio of the piece to showcase or create on site for a juried panel review. Selected artists will be notified May 15. Natural and environmental themes and the use of natural materials are encouraged.
Entries will be displayed online; 12 works will be selected to showcase in the gardens or in the education center. The entry fee is $15 per work. The grand prize for the juried exhibition is an overnight oceanfront stay at the Mauna Lani Resort.
An artists’ tour of the gardens is slated from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday. Installation dates are May 22 and 23. An artists’ reception is planned May 24. Request an entry form at hawaii@oneisland.org; visit oneisland.org for more information.
Harbor Gallery
makes donation to watershed project
Approximately 50 volunteers recently joined the ranks of the Kohala Watershed Partnership on the slopes of Kohala Mountain to plant hundreds of endemic trees to help re-establish a forest that flourished there centuries ago. Harbor Gallery owners Gunner and Elli Mench were among them, not only to plant trees, but also to present a $7,600 donation to the Kohala Center for the program. Since 2010, Harbor Gallery has donated more than $27,000 to this endeavor to replenish the watershed from the Kohala Mountain Forest Reserve to Pelekane Bay.
The gallery funds donations through purchases made during its biannual wood shows. The Winter Wood Show was held in January and February; the Summer Wood Show runs June 29 through July 27.

First Friday
reception planned for Cliff Johns Gallery
The Cliff Johns Gallery announces “First Friday” — a reception and exhibit showcasing two Big Island artists, the first Friday of every month. Formerly located in Holualoa, now open in Mango Court in Kainaliu, the gallery displays the work of Johns, a master wood turner, sculptor and ipu tattoo artist, as well as 31 island artists representing a variety of media.
A First Friday event showcasing the work of Johns and wall artist Lisa Bunge is slated from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Pupu and beverages will be served.
