Photography classes offered in Kona
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is now registering for beginner, intermediate and advanced photography classes at Hale Halawai in North Kona.
The county has planned both morning and evening classes taught by Robert Weygand Sr. Film or digital cameras are required for this class. A special darkroom will also be offered.
Registration closes Friday and classes begin Monday. Class size is limited.

HGEA hoolaulea
slated Saturday
The Hawaii Government Employees Association Hawaii Island Division announces its second hoolaulea to benefit the Charles R. Kendall Scholarship and Education Fund, which provides educational benefits to HGEA members and their immediate families.
The hoolaulea is slated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hilo Hooganji Mission, 457 Manono St. The event includes entertainment, food, arts and craft vendors and fresh baked goods. Tsunami preparedness workshop is May 21
In partnership with the Pacific Tsunami Museum, the Hilo Downtown Improvement Association and the Hilo Improvement Program are offering a Tsunami Preparedness Workshop for businesses and the community from 5 to 7 p.m. May 21 at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. Speakers will include Gerard Fryer of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, Stafford Oyama of the Downtown Improvement Association and Bill Hanson of Hawaii County Civil Defense.
The workshop will provide tools and information for business owners whose duty is to protect employees and customers. Everyone will learn to protect irreplaceable assets and better prepare for the next tsunami warning.

VFW Post 12122 meets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge in Kailua-Kona. Project Compassion, Memorial Day and the state convention will be discussed, as well as the search for a permanent location. Members are requested to attend.

Project Compassion
to benefit VFW post
Denny’s Restaurant in partnership with the Kona Rotary Club of Kona is sponsoring a Project Compassion to benefit the Christoper Camero Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 of Kona.
The benefit will run from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Henry Street restaurant. VFW and VFW Auxiliary members will serve as greeters and order takers.
Denny’s will donate 20 percent of sales during the event and servers donate all their tips to the VFW, a nonprofit organization that honors U.S. military veterans who served overseas during a time of conflict.

Waimea Outdoor Circle annual meeting May 11
Waimea Outdoor Circle’s annual membership auction is slated from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at Merriman’s Restaurant. The program features a silent auction, guest speaker Mayor Billy Kenoi, an awards presentation and election of officers.

Waimea flea market open Saturday
The indoor flea market at New Hope Waimea Gym takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The gym is located on Church Row next to Cherry Blossom Park across the street from the Waimea Police Station. Proceeds from the monthly marketplace benefit the gymnasium improvement fund at New Hope Waimea.
