Teodorico D. “Chief” “Ekong” Mendoza, 88, of Pepeekeo died April 24, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Dec. 6, 1924, in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a retired crane operator for Hilo Coast Processing Co., worked for Hakalau Sugar Plantation Co. and was a member of the Pepeekeo Senior Citizens, ILWU Pepeekeo Pension Club, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. May 5 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. wake service. Friends may also call at 9 a.m. May 6 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial follows at Alae Cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by sons, Teodorico (Lorraine) Mendoza Jr., Randall Mendoza and Clay Mendoza, all of Pepeekeo, Duane (Judith) Mendoza of Hilo, Benjamin (Brenda) Mendoza of Kona, Paul (Lei) Mendoza of Pahoa; brothers, Isabel (Petra) Mendoza, Ernesto (Francisca) Mendoza, Fedencio (Leonida) Mendoza and Rudy Mendoza, all of Philippines; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.
