John “Sonny” Kaiewe Jr., 83, of Hilo died April 20, 2013, at home. Born Aug. 7, 1929 in Olaa, he was a retired resource manager specialist for the U.S. Department of Interior at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, an Army veteran and member of Glad Tidings Church in Hilo, Hawaii Army National Guard and Keola Pono No Na Kupuna.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. May 7 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, Hilo; for a 10 a.m. celebration of life. Burial follows at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests aloha attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Cecilia Kaiewe of Hilo; son, John Kaiewe III of Olaa; daughters, Gail Laila (Dominic Anderson) Aguiar of Hilo, Martha Ann Aquino of Olaa, Hulali (Paulsmith) Kane of Hookena;brothers, Oliver (Anna) Fujiyama and William Ahuna, both of Honolulu, Archie (Melody) Fujiyama of Keaau, William (Doreen) Fujiyama of Kurtistown, Donald (Karen) Fujiyama and Solomon (Mary Jane) Fujiyama, both of Hilo, Jimmy (Loretta) Jones of Waimanalo, Oahu;sisters, Linda Jones and Thelma (Wallace) Readon, both of Honolulu, Jennie MaCadang of Los Angeles, Priscilla (Paul) Soto of California, Lei (George) Cabiling of Kona, Nona Weaver of Makakilo, Oahu, Gladys Nakoa of Waimanalo, Oahu; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
