Police conducting satisfaction survey
The public is invited to participate in an anonymous community satisfaction survey for the Hawaii Police Department during May.
Chief Harry Kubojiri said previous surveys helped him identify actions the police department could take to increase community satisfaction. “Our partnership with the community is crucial,” Kubojiri said. “This survey is one of the ways we can improve that partnership by incorporating community feedback into our daily operations.”
The Internet survey will be open from 9 a.m. Wednesday until 4 p.m. May 31 at hawaiipolice.com. It takes about five minutes to complete and is limited to one survey per computer. Participants will be able to enter detailed comments and suggestions at the end of the survey. The respondent’s IP address will not be stored in the survey results.
The responses will be collected and compiled by an outside source. After the survey period, results will be posted on the department’s website.
Sign ordinance discussion at Waimea Town Meeting
A Waimea Community Association Town Meeting begins at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the Waimea School cafeteria. Kelly Wilson, the Hawaii County Department of Public Works building division plans examiner, will lead a discussion of the county’s sign ordinance.
Wilson will review the rules, the process for review and approval and enforcement policy. Wilson will address specific concerns brought forward by the community including building signage, banners, sandwich boards and mobile signs.
A discussion of West Hawaii Mediation Center’s services, including foreclosure mediation, is also on the agenda.
The community is invited to all association town meetings; there are no membership dues. Starbucks will provide coffee; donations to a local food pantry are requested.

Lauhala symposium coming to Waimea
The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawaii Education and Research Center and Hawaii Preparatory Academy will hold a “Symposium on Sustainability and Traditional Pacific Island Arts: The Art of Lauhala, Form and Function,” Friday and Saturday at the HPA Gates Performing Arts Center in Waimea. Admission is free Friday; Saturday admission is $55.
The symposium will celebrate and educate the public on the important role lauhala fiber work traditions played in the settlement and development of the Pacific region. The event includes lectures, talk story sessions, a fiber arts exhibition, weaving workshops and demonstrations. Call the center at 775-8890 for event details.
St. Jude’s plans Cinco de Mayo fundraiser
St. Jude’s Episcopal Church on Paradise Parkway in Ocean View will hold its Cinco de Mayo fundraiser Friday. Proceeds will benefit the Shower Project. St. Jude’s is building a public shower for the use of the needy in the community ,which will be open one day a week.
The menu will include enchiladas, rice, beans, salad, dessert and beverage. There will be live music at the family-friendly event. Doors open at 6; dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 apiece or $20 for two. For tickets or more information, call 939-7555.
Waimea library to celebrate Free Comic Book Day
Saturday is Free Comic Book Day worldwide. To celebrate, patrons of Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library in Waimea, with valid Hawaii State Public Library System cards, will receive a special free comic book, while supplies last.
The selection of comics may include “Star Wars,” “Disney Fairies” and “Walking Dead Special.”

Jogging path cleanup, plant sale planned
Friends for Fitness’ monthly community cleanup of the Makaeo Jogging Path at the Old Kona Airport Park is planned from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers should meet at the entrance by the water fountain. Garden tools, light refreshments and snacks are provided.
A plant sale will be held at the walking path entrance. Proceeds will benefit Friends for Fitness and be used to beautify the park.
