The Kona Courthouse in Kealakekua was evacuated temporarily Monday morning, after several people began coughing, possibly after exposure to something in the air, a Fire Department official said.

Battalion Chief Reuben Chun said the courthouse was reopen before 11 a.m. He said paramedics were available and a few people were “checked out,” but he did not believe anyone had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

A hazardous materials team investigated the situation, but could not pinpoint what caused people to begin coughing, Chun said.
