Big Island police arrested 20 drivers for suspected drunken driving between April 15 and Monday; eight were involved in traffic accidents.

Police have made 409 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 435 during the same period in 2012, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 10 motorists, Kona officers arrested seven, Puna officers arrested two and South Kohala officers arrested one, according to police.

There have been 395 major accidents this year compared with 470 during the same period in 2012. To date, there have been 12 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 11 at this time in 2012.
