The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning for the Big Island summits through 6 p.m.

The service forecast southwest winds of 35 mph to 50 mph with gusts topping 75 mph for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits above the 8,000-foot elevation.

A high wind warning for the summits means winds of at least 40 mph, or gusts of at least 60 mph, are forecast. Residents are urged to secure and protect property. Travel to the summit areas should be delayed until the winds subside.
