Teams of three to four cyclists worked together to cross the finish line as fast as they could in a Hawaii Cycling Club training team trial on April 13.

The 12 participating teams lined up near Waikoloa Beach Drive, and at 8 a.m., the first team was sent off, with other squads being sent off in 30-second intervals.

Once they were sent off, the team members used their cycling strengths to push and pull each other to the finish line located 16.7 miles away — just before the entrance to Kona International Airport. Drafting was legal within individual teams, but each team needed to work for itself.

Team So Wee De Bess crossed the finish line in an outstanding time of 36 minutes, 54 seconds for first place overall. So Wee De Bess had some of Kona’s fastest athletes: Jano Soto, Bree Wee, Mike DeCarli and Andrea Bess. The power team worked together to average 27.9 miles per hour.

Kiser Works — Kym Kiser, Kris Kiser, Grant Miller and Don Baldassari — crossed the line at 37:25 to claim second place. Make It Rain, formed by Chris Gregory, Joe Barcia and Yanis Nora, took third overall and first in the all-male division (39:45).

Team 3 Chicks and A Babe — Shirley Pratt, Linda Hallinger, Kristina Sawaya and Cedes DeCarli — won the female division. Though they had no other all female teams to compete against, they worked hard together to finish 10th overall with a time of 52:54.

Spoiled Rotten, formed by Jim Moore, Harry Yoshida, Chris Morrison and Linny Cox, took second place in the all-male division with a time of 43:07. Third went to Team VOG, with the group of Paul Savant, Peter Wizinowich, Michael Whelan and Matt Lanin crossing the finish line at 46:58.

In the coed division, Team 2 1/2 Men, formed by Helgi Olafson, Rich Bell and Sylvia Ravaglia, claimed third (39:48), finishing behind So Wee De Bess and Kiser Works.

Congratulations to all who participated in the HCC team time trial.

Hawaii Cycling Club will host another training time trial on Saturday. This will be the first annual Hapuna Beach Training Time Trial.

This event is an individual time trial and will not be draft legal. The course will start from the Hapuna Beach parking lot entrance. Cyclists will ride mauka on Hapuna Beach Road and head south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway to the Waikoloa Beach Drive, where they will make a U-turn (there will be a police officer directing traffic) and continue north to the finish line near Kaunaoa Drive.

Registration will take place from 7 to 7:40 a.m. near the snack bar at Hapuna Beach. A mandatory pre-race meeting will be held at 7:50, and the time trial will begin at 8 a.m., with one cyclist beginning every 30 seconds. This is a free community event.

On Sunday, Frozen Pea Productions will host the Carboman 10-mile Mosey, Roadrunner 3.5-mile Romp and 1-Mile Mighty Mouse Scamper at 8:03 a.m. Hawaiian time. All races will begin near Kailua Pier, and participants will head down Alii Drive until their designated turnarounds. This race is a free community event and open to all.

Hope to see you all out there. Until next time, happy training.
