The public is invited to meet Maui “eco-artist” Mckenna Hallett from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Elements in downtown Hawi. The owner of Currents — low-impact jewelry, Hallett has supplied Elements’ store owner Prakash Flynn with her “wearable found-object jewelry” for more than a decade. Saturday’s event includes a trunk show featuring Hallett’s creations.
“I am continually awed by Mckenna’s creativity and talent and the sense of fun in her jewelry,” Flynn said. “I love wearing and sharing her work. And we love telling people about her raw materials like car radiators, old appliances, scraps of metal from demolitions, and a variety of plumbing and electrical discards. She has amazing pieces and a huge following throughout the state and nation.”
Hallett said, “The jewelry is the vehicle that drives another very important story behind why I use found objects, and more importantly, why I use no fossil fuels during the construction of my line. No heat, solder, no welding, no power tools – I even converted a Singer sewing machine treadle and use it for all my sanding and grinding.”
Saturday’s event will feature a drawing for a $100 Elements gift certificate and a door prize donated by the artist. For more information, contact Element Jewelry and Crafts at 889-0760 or elements@elementsjewelryandcrafts.com. For more about Hallett, visit stoprecycling.com.
