One lane of Kuakini Highway remains open between Kamehameha III Road and Akoni Drive following a three-car accident Thursday afternoon.

One of the drivers involved, a woman, was critically injured in the three-car accident reported at 2:21 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. She and two other drivers, who suffered minor injuries, were transported to Kona Community Hospital.

The Hawaii Police Department anticipates that both lanes will reopen in about three hours. The road was closed about 3 p.m. following the accident.

Motorists traveling northbound on Kuakini Highway can use Highway 180, which can be accessed via Haawina or Kalelei streets or Honalo junction; the Mamalahoa Bypass and Alii Drive; or Kamehameha III Road and Alii Drive.

Southbound motorists can use Highway 180, accessible via Hualalai Road, or Alii Drive and either the Kamehameha III Road or Mamalahoa Bypass to avoid the area.
