Historical boat tour coming up April 27
The public is invited to set sail aboard the Body Glove on a historical sunset dinner cruise to benefit the Kona Historical Society from 4 to 7 p.m. April 27. The cruise, from Kailua Bay to the Capt. Cook Monument at Kealakekua Bay, includes narration of the stories, history and legends associated with Hawaii Island’s west coastline and live music.
A Hawaiian-style buffet and nonalcoholic beverages are included; a no-host bar will be open. Tickets are $98.38 for society members; $115.74 for nonmembers. Call the Body Glove at (800) 551-8911 to reserve a seat on the Kona Historical Society Special Cruise.

Mokuaikaua fundraiser is Saturday
Kona International Market is hosting a garage sale, bake sale and car wash from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds from the event will go toward costuming for the Mokuaikaua Church worship arts ministry, Hoomana Hana Noeau.

Korean War veterans meeting Saturday
The Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 meets at 10 a.m. Saturday at Denny’s Restaurant on Henry Street in Kailua-Kona
Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in any of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard if said service was within Korea, including territorial waters and airspace, at any time between Sept. 3, 1945m and the present, or said service was outside of Korea between June 25, 1950, and Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

Quilters to get together Saturday
Mauna Kea Quilters is a group of patchwork quilters who share their love of quilting with others. The group will meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Thelma Parker Memorial Library meeting room in Waimea. Following a business meeting, members will have a show-and-tell and share new ideas and techniques.
The group donates quilts to help raise money for organizations such as Malaai, The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School, and Relay for Life. Mauna Kea Quilters also provides quilts to police and fire departments and North Hawaii Community Hospital for those in need.

VFW Auxiliary to plan upcoming events
The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 meets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hualalai Academy Campus’ Bridge Building. Attendees will discuss Leah’s Italian Extravaganza lunch, slated April 28 at Teru’s; Project Compassion, scheduled May 5 at Denny’s; and the Hawaii State VFW Convention, planned June 13 to 15 at the Royal Kona Resort.
Waimea Outdoor Circle plant sale is Saturday
Waimea Outdoor Circle’s Spring Plant Sale is slated from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Waimea Nature Park, Ulu Laau A Garden of Trees. The sale will include native plants, citrus trees, herbs and vegetable starts, along with orchids, Spanish moss and ornamentals, as well as crafts and food. Tours and information on topics such as coqui frogs, the Waimea stream-side trail and the park will be offered.

Woodturners meeting Saturday
The American Association of Woodturners, West Hawaii chapter, meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the PacRim Tempering vuilding, 73-4260 Hulikoa Drive. Internationally known artists Gerrit Van Ness and Jim Christiansen will discuss artistic form and critique. Members and guests and visitors of all skill levels are welcome. Bring a chair and lunch.

Lauhala conference coming in May
The 18th annual Ka Ulu Lauhala O Kona Lauhala Conference is slated from May 15 to 18 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Kumu from every Hawaiian island will share their expertise and foster a greater knowledge of the ancient art of lauhala weaving.
More than 20 classes are planned to teach weavers of multiple skill levels how to create items including bracelets, hats, mats and baskets. Ka Ulu Lauhala O Kona is a nonprofit education preservation organization founded almost two decades ago by kumu Elizabeth Maluihi Lee. The registration deadline is Monday. Some scholarships are available.

Lions Club of Kona offers $10,000 grant
The Lions Club of Kona, in partnership with The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc., is seeking a 501(c)(3) community service provider wishing to serve the poor and needy citizens of West Hawaii, with a grant amount of $10,000.
As an integral part of this partnership, an additional benefit will be 100 community service hours donated to the organization by Lions Club of Kona members.
The club is interested in supporting initiatives that address the following social concerns: vision or hearing assistance, prevention of homelessness, ailment or disease prevention, domestic violence awareness and prevention, and mental health support.
