A 15-year-old boy escaped injury Wednesday after falling into a lava tube at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

A 15-year-old boy escaped injury Wednesday after falling into a lava tube at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Responding to the 6:44 p.m. report, Hawaii Fire Department and park personnel determined the boy apparently fell about 20 feet into a lava tube in the vicinity of the park’s visitor center, according to the fire department. Rescue personnel used lifelines to extricate the boy.

The boy was subsequently examined by medics, who determined he had suffered no injuries, according to the department. No further information was available.
