College recruiting seminars this week
There will be two college recruiting seminars this week at Kona schools.
The first one will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Konawaena. The second will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kealakehe.
Both seminars are designed to educate parents and athletes about the recruiting process.

Konawaena yearbook golf tournament Saturday
The third annual Konawaena yearbook golf tournament will be held at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Kona Country Club’s Alii Mountain course. Registration will be at 6:30 a.m.
The registration fee is $100 per person. The format will be a two-person team scramble with 80 percent of combined total handicap.
Players with no handicap will be determined using the score from the last round played and should bring a scorecard to registration.
The proceeds from this tournament will assist Konawaena High School in paying for the yearly expenses incurred from producing the Ka Wena O Kona yearbook. The school is seeking players, hole sponsors and donors.

Roseler hits hole-in-one
Kathy Roseler shot a hole-in-one on April 1 at Makalei Golf Club.
Roseler used a 5-iron on the 110-yard, par-3 fifth hole.
Rob Wohlgemuth, Ann Milne, Sally Alapai, Barbara Lisivick and Kay Howells witnessed the shot.
Kayak fishing
clinic this weekend
A fishing clinic for kayakers will be held Saturday and Sunday. The session on Saturday starts at 9 a.m. at P&P Kayaks at 73-4976 Kamanu Street, Suite 101. The session will cover basic fishing by kayak in Hawaiian waters. Participants will construct their own fishing rigs for inshore and ocean offshore species.
The Sunday session will be on the water with a probable launch site from Keauhou Bay.

Hawaii Cycling Club time trials this month
The Hawaii Cycling Club will present the Waikoloa Beach team time trial and the Hapuna Beach time trial this month to bicyclists of all ages and abilities.
The Waikoloa Beach team time trial will be at 8 a.m. Saturday. Cyclists are encouraged to form teams of three to four riders. Individual cyclists will be assigned to a team. The race will begin at the Highway 19 sign just south of Waikoloa Beach Road. Cyclists will ride 16.7 miles south to Kona International Airport.
Registration will be from 7 to 7:40 a.m. adjacent to Bike Works Beach and Sports in the Queens’ MarketPlace. A prerace meeting will be held at 7:50 a.m. near the start line.
The Hapuna Beach training time trial will be held at 8 a.m. April 20 starting at the entrance to the Hapuna Beach parking lot. Cyclists will ride mauka on Hapuna Beach Road, turn south on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway to the Waikoloa Village Road intersection, where they will make a U-turn (police will be directing traffic) and ride north to the finish line near Kaunaoa Drive for a total travel of 12.7 miles.
Registration will be from 7 to 7:40 a.m. near the snack bar at Hapuna Beach. The prerace meeting will be held at the start line at 7:50 a.m.
At the end of HCC events there is a talk story/aid station. Both races are available to nonmembers.

UH-Hilo basketball coaches clinic April 16
The University of Hawaii at Hilo will host a high school basketball coaches clinic from 6 to 10 p.m. April 16 in the UH-Hilo Athletic Complex, Building 320C, Room 118 and the school’s gymnasium.
UH-Hilo women’s basketball coach David Kaneshiro and the school’s athletic director Dexter Irvin, and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs athletic director Stephen Kirkham will lead the clinic.

Waimea Parks and Recreation softball tournament May 3-5
Teams may now register for a Waimea Hawaii County Parks and Recreation coed softball tournament scheduled for May 3-5 at Waimea Park.
The entry fee is $200, and participation is limited to 12 teams. The tournament will benefit athletics in Waimea’s Parks and Recreation division.

Honokaa High
seeks coaches
Honokaa High will accept applications for its boys and girls varsity basketball head coaching positions.
Applications are available from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the school’s main office. Submit completed applications in the main office or the athletic director’s office located in Honokaa Armory. The application deadlines is April 27.

Kona Horseshoe Pitchers tournament April 20-21
The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club’s annual Hand of Friendship Horseshoe Tournament will be held at 8 a.m. April 20-21 at Old Kona Airport Park behind the tennis courts.
The tournament will follow a mixed singles format. The play for April 20 will require a $25 registration fee, and it will use a count-all scoring system with no handicaps.
The top 10 scorers will then be able to compete on April 21 in a 10-round championship class event. There is a $20 entry fee for the second day.

KGMA hunting
permits available
The Department of Land and Natural Resources will grant muzzleloader animal control permits for feral goats and feral sheep at Kaohe Game Management Area through Sunday.
Kaohe Game Management Area is an archery unit for game mammals with no bag limit for sheep and goats. To increase public harvest efficiency of feral goats and sheep, DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife is allowing the use of muzzleloaders for licensed hunters by permit.
Permits will be available at the Kilohana check station for muzzleloader for feral goats and sheep with no bag limit, but every effort must be made to retrieve and harvest animals within designated areas.
Hunters must use every safety precaution in using muzzleloaders. Blaze orange is required for all hunters in Kaohe GMA, including archery hunters.
DLNR is increasing hunter participation in Kaohe GMA to protect Palila Critical Habitat from overgrazing of mamane trees from feral goats and sheep. Further information may be obtained by contacting the DOFAW offices in Hilo at 974-4221 or in Waimea at 887-6063.
KBXtreme to host PBA regional tournament
Approximately 40 professional bowlers will come to the Big Island for the PBA West/Northwest Kona Open Regional Bowling Tournament, which will take place April 22-23 at KBXtreme.
Some of the pros expected to attend include Norm Duke, Rhino Page, Scott Norton, Josh Blanchard, Missy Parkin, Michael Fagan, Tommy Jones, Steve Smith and Tom Hess.
The event also includes a pro-am in which amateurs can compete with the professionals. KBXtreme is seeking sponsors to ensure a successful tournament.

Brantley Center golf tourney April 28
Brantley Center Inc. will host its 34th annual golf tournament at 7:15 a.m. April 28 at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course.
The tournament features a two-person, best ball format, and the registration fee of $125 per person includes green fees and lunch. Check-in will be at 6:30 a.m.

Lopes on Emily
T. Gail Show
Merv Lopes, the former basketball coach at Chaminade who led the Silverswords to an upset of Virginia in the 1982 Maui Invitational, is a guest on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available under “lineup” at espnhawaii.com and as an iTunes podcast.
Lopes was a junior high guidance counselor while coaching Chaminade that year, and he will discuss that Chaminade team, the victory and what coaching has meant to him.
Buster Bustamante will also be a guest. He was Mauna Lani director of golf when the Mauna Lani hosted the Mauna Lani Senior Skins.
Gail will also discuss the new Jackie Robinson film, “42.”
