34 arrested for suspected DUI

Police arrested 34 drivers for suspected drunken driving between March 25 and Monday; six were involved in traffic accidents and five drivers were under age 21.

Police have made 342 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 362 during the same period in 2012, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 15 drivers, South Hilo officers arrested 14 motorists, South Kohala officers arrested three motorists, and Puna officers arrested two drivers, police said.

There have been 318 major accidents this year compared with 378 during the same period in 2012. To date, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with seven at this time in 2012. Two of the fatalities this year were related to drugs, alcohol or a combination of both, police said.
