The junior pitcher threw a no-hitter, striking out 16 of the 19 batters he faced as the Waveriders beat the Daggers 10-0 in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation baseball game.
Pahoa’s leadoff batter in the fourth inning reached on an error, denying Sanchez a perfect game in a contest that ended in the bottom of the sixth inning because of the league’s 10-run mercy rule.
“He was really placing his fastball, and he was ahead in the count all day long,” Kealakehe coach Josh Hansen said of Sanchez, who threw just 58 pitches.
Sanchez also helped himself at the plate, lining a two-run single in the first inning. He also scored two runs, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk and three stolen bases.
Hansen said his team’s hitting is “still not where we want it to be,” but the Waveriders (1-3, 2-5), taking advantage of seven walks and two hit batsmen by Pahoa starter Dathan Wong-Chong, stole 12 bases against the Daggers (0-4, 0-7).
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Marcus DeGrate capped a four-run inning and invoked the mercy rule when he stole second and came home on two wild pitches.
Wong-Chong, who recorded three strikeouts, went the distance in taking the loss.

c Keaau 3, Honokaa 0: Maleko Remlinger struck out 10 batters in a masterful five-hit shutout for the host Cougars, who scored all of their runs in the fourth inning.
Remlinger, who walked three batters, threw 102 pitches and stranded four runners in scoring position.
Keaau (2-2 BIIF, 2-4 overall) loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth inning, and the Dragons (1-4, 1-6) almost wiggled out of the jam, getting two forceouts at home plate on infield grounders. However, an error in right field on a fly ball by Justin Quesada allowed Cody Silva and Byron Cachola to score, and Derek Kalani later stole home.
Cody Silva, who had a bunt single in the fourth, finished 2-for-3.
Robert Abran took the loss for Honokaa (1-4, 1-6). In three innings, he allowed two runs on two hits, striking out three and walking two. Ikena Juan went the rest of the way on the mound, giving up a run on three hits. He struck out two.
At the plate, the Dragons’ Austin Jardine went 2-for-4.

c Waiakea 11, Kohala 0: Kean Wong went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Alika Guillermo also drove in three runs in Kapaau for the Warriors, who piled up 11 hits in a contest that ended after five innings because of the league’s 10-run mercy rule.
Guillermo finished 2-for-4, and Kodi Medeiros went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Waiakea (3-1, 6-1).
Ryder Oshiro gave up two hits over four innings to get the win. He struck out three and walked none.
The Cowboys’ Austin Racoma took the loss. In 2 1/3 innings, he gave up four runs on five hits, walking four batters and hitting four.
Kainalu Emeliano-Solomon and Haruto Fuertes each had a single for Kohala (0-4, 0-6).

Softball
c Hawaii Prep 7, Ka‘u 2: Kawena Lim-Samura pitched a one-hitter, walking just three batters and striking out three in Pahala as Ka Makani won its first game of the season.
Lim-Samura has improved her control since the beginning of the season, when she walked 20 or more batters twice.
“To go from 24 walks to just three walks is really good for us going into the rest of the season,’’ HPA coach Betsy Tranquilli said. “She’s been consistently throwing strikes and giving us a chance to win.’’
Alexa Meyer led HPA (1-4 BIIF, 1-8 overall) at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
“Obviously, it was an important game, and I’m glad we pulled it out,’’ Tranquilli said. “It’s nice to see progress.”
Shaylin Navarro took the loss for Ka‘u (0-4, 0-8).
Kaila Olson and Ciera Kaopua had an RBI apiece for the Trojans.
