The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island through 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Heavy rain is falling at a rate of 2 inches per hour on the Kona slopes between Kailua-Kona and Waikoloa, according to the service. It noted specifically the areas of Waikoloa Village, Waikoloa Beach Resort, Saddle Road, Puuanahulu and Puako in the advisory.

The service advises staying away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. It also noted that rainfall and runoff can cause hazardous driving conditions including reduced visibility and braking action. Motorists and pedestrians are advised not to cross fast-flowing or rising water.
