An opening reception for the third annual Maoli Arts Month exhibit is slated from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Wailoa Art and Cultural Center in Hilo. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served; Apokolani, a Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee in the jazz category, will perform. The exhibit runs through April 25.
An opening reception for the third annual Maoli Arts Month exhibit is slated from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Wailoa Art and Cultural Center in Hilo. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition features kanaka maoli artists in the main gallery and Lanakila Learning Center student work in the Fountain Gallery.
Cultural practitioners will display kapa, woven hala, dyed ipu, carved bone and quilted creations. Kauanoe Chang, Charlie Dickson, Shannon Weaver McKay and Harinani Orme will present paintings and prints. Photographer Keoki Carter and mixed-media artist Bernice Akamine round out the exhibition.
MAMo is a community-based effort to celebrate the depth, breadth and diversity of the Native Hawaiian arts community. The group seeks to increase the presence of Native Hawaiian arts and artists in museums and galleries.
