Festival announces ‘open concert’ program
Hawaii Performing Arts Festival has introduced a program to help disadvantaged, disabled and challenged music lovers attend its concerts at no charge — 5 percent of HPAF’s summer concert tickets will be given to worthy individuals.
Nonprofit organizations in Hilo, Kailua-Kona and Waimea may nominate people to receive these complimentary tickets. For more information, contact Executive Director Genette Freeman at genette.freeman@msn.com or 333-7378.
The festival runs from July 9 to 28, with concerts in Waimea, Honokaa, Hilo and Kailua-Kona. Violinist Chee-Yun is scheduled to perform, as are staged operas and a Broadway review. Jazz vocalist Liane Carroll opens the season at the Kahilu Theatre. A complete concert schedule will be released in April.

Cliff Johns Gallery moves to new location
The Cliff Johns Gallery invites the community to celebrate the grand opening of its new location in the Mango Court in Kainaliu, next to Annie’s Burgers, from 6 to 9 p.m. April 5. Artists represented at the gallery will also attend the “Night Under the Stars” event.
The gallery continues to offer woodworking in Hawaii, specializing in wood bowls, sculptures and furniture from local artists. All pieces are crafted from Hawaiian woods, such as koa, milo, Norfolk and Cook pine, and kamani. The gallery also showcases a selection of wall art created by local artists.
Artists present their work at Kahilu
Patrick O’Kiersey will display his paintings, Gordon Motta, his ceramics, and Joseph Ruesing, digital prints, through April 18 at the Kahilu Theatre Gallery at the Parker Ranch Center in Waimea. An opening reception is slated from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today. Admission is free.
The gallery is open from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Friday. Call the gallery at 885-6868.

Flameworked glass lecture slated Thursday
Hawaii Craftsmen is sponsoring an Aha Hana Lima Workshop with flamework glass artist Robert Mickelsen on Thursday at Big Island Glass Gallery, 45-3626B Mamane, Honokaa. The free program, open to the public, begins with a 5:30 p.m. reception, followed by a lecture at 6:30.
Mickelsen was born in Virginia and raised in Honolulu. His work is exhibited at locations including the Renwick Gallery of American Crafts at the Smithsonian, the Corning Museum of Glass and The Toledo Museum of Art. He has taught extensively at major glass schools such as the Pilchuck Glass School, Pittsburgh Glass Center and The Eugene Glass School. He has filmed and produced two videos on his flameworking process and has published numerous technical and historical articles on flameworked glass. He served for six years on the board of directors of the Glass Art Society.
