A 70-year-old Canadian man apparently drowned Wednesday at Kahaluu Beach Park in North Kona.

The victim has been identified as Ian Michael Gordon of Alberta, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Gordon had apparently been snorkeling when he became motionless about 40 feet from shore, according to police. A lifeguard brought the man ashore and began CPR. Gordon was transported to Kona Community Hospital where he died at 4:13 p.m.

Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest and are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
