A 55-year-old man allegedly kept Hawaii Police Department officers at bay for almost seven hours in a standoff in Puna Tuesday.
Police Special Response Team officers arrested the Eden Roc man at about 3:45 p.m. after an incident that began before 9 a.m. when Puna officers responded to a call of an armed man in a home on Ahi Avenue in the Eden Roc subdivision.
The suspect had allegedly threatened the occupants of the house with a firearm.
According to police, a 35-year-old female relative of the man escaped the house, and said the man — armed with multiple weapons — was preventing his wife from leaving the home.
Police negotiated with the man, who surrendered without incident — his 55-year-old wife was found unharmed.
The man is being held in the Hilo police cellblock. He had not been charged as of press time.
