Kona Pacific taking applications for 2013-14
Kona Pacific Public Charter School is accepting applications from parents through March 31. Openings are available in all classes — from junior kindergarten through eighth grade for school year 2013-14. Lottery selection for available spaces is on April 8.
Open houses begin at 8:10 a.m. Tuesdays. Call to schedule another time if necessary. Its program is inspired by Waldorf education and rooted in the land and culture of Hawaii.
Kona Pacific is a tuition free public school. Its campus is located above Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua.

Essay contest
deadline is April 19
Auto Body Hawaii is accepting entries, through April 19, from West Hawaii high school seniors and teachers for its annual essay contest.
The graduating senior with the winning essay will receive $500. The winning teacher essayist will receive $500, as well as a car wash gift certificate.
Essays must respond to the following theme: Among many is a growing sentiment that post-secondary education may not be an option for a number of graduating high school students. A report indicates approximately 62 percent of West Hawaii’s graduates did not pursue further education; some may have had prior obligations, some may have not have been able to bear the cost, while others simply had no interest. What opportunities do you think can be created for graduating students who are not pursuing further education and decide to remain here in West Hawaii?

Credit union accepting scholarship applications
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union is accepting scholarship applications from high school seniors on Hawaii Island.
The credit union will award five $2,500 scholarships to graduating seniors headed to an institution of higher learning.
The Peter Hirata, Albert Akana, Katsumasa Tomita and Frank Ishii scholarships are awarded to students based on need, academic achievement, career goals and extracurricular activities. The John Y. Iwane scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior meeting the above criteria and planning to enter an agriculture-related field of study.
Any senior graduating from a school on Hawaii Island, planning to attend a two- or four-year institute of higher learning may apply.
Fill out an application online at hicommfcu.com or obtain a copy through high school counseling offices, at any HCFCU or at student credit unions at Kealakehe, Konawaena and Kohala high schools. Applications must be received by April 8 to be considered.
Buddhist women offer $1,000 scholarship
The Hawaii Island United Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior active with the Honpa Hongwanji on Hawaii Island.
The application packet including forms, rules and instructions for the scholarship can be obtained by contacting Jo Kim, chairwoman, at bwascholarship2013@gmail.com. The deadline to submit the application is April 15.
