31 arrested for suspected DUI

Police arrested 31 drivers for suspected drunken driving between March 18 and Monday; two were involved in traffic accidents and four drivers were under age 21.

Police have made 308 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 334 during the same period in 2012, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 14 motorists, Kona arrested 13 drivers, and South Kohala officers arrested two motorists. Puna and Ka’u officers arrested one in each district, police said.

There have been 293 major accidents this year compared with 358 during the same period in 2012. To date, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with seven at this time in 2012. Two of the fatalities this year were related to drugs, police said.
