The Hawaii Police Department is investigating a possible drowning that occurred Saturday in the waters offshore of Waawaa, an area of Orr’s Beach.

Responding at a 3:37 p.m. call, rescue personnel from the Hawaii County Fire Department learned a 37-year-old man went into the ocean and immediately got into trouble. His friends attempted to rescue him, but he went under, fire officials stated in a news release.

Rescuers located the man underwater about 10 yards offshore and brought him to shore. Chopper one then transported the man to a landing zone on Highway 137, where he was then taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center, fire officials said.

No further information was available as of press time.
