Hawaii Cycling Club held a free training time trial on Saturday, inviting any cyclists who wanted to join in on the fun.
The course for this month’s time trial ran along the Queen Kaahumanu Highway from Waikoloa Beach Road to the Kua Bay entrance road for a total of 12.2 miles. Weather conditions made this training ride harder than most. With heavy rain and changing winds, athletes had to pedal hard to make the times they were shooting for.
Less than one minute separated the first-, second-, and third-place finishers in both the men’s and the women’s races. Tom Peichel of Alaska finished with the fastest time of the day at 30 minutes, 59 seconds. Local athlete Sean Maynard was right on Peichel’s heels, finishing just 1 second behind at 31:00. Mike DeCarli clocked in at 31:57 to take third.
For the women, Shannon Donley of Alaska finished the 12.2-mile course in 37:17. LaVerne Curry posted the second-fastest time at 37:34 in her first time trial appearance. Sylvia Ravaglia was third (38:07).
Congratulations to all who participated in the Hawaii Cycling Club time trial.
In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday, the Kealakehe Waverider Triathlon Club hosted its inaugural Leprechaun-A-Thon and Sham Walk.
The fundraiser for the high school club included a fun 5K run/walk. The race began at 7:30 a.m. from Laaloa Beach Park (commonly known as Magic Sands), ran south to Kamehameha III Road and back to the finish located at the beach park.
Athletes participating in the fun run came dressed in their most festive running attire: shamrock sunglasses, leprechaun outfits, tutus and every shade of green.
Just 1 second separated first and second place for both the men’s and women’s races. Sam Corace finished the 3.1-mile race in 17:46, with James Cotter right behind at 17:47. Alexander Giinthir took third with a time of 18:34.
Brooke Myers finished 10th overall and first for the women in a fast time of 20:53. Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen was right on Myers’ heels, taking second with a time of 20:54. Jen Winegarner finished third (21:01).
Congratulations to all who competed, and a big mahalo for supporting the Waverider Triathlon Club.
The 16th annual Big Island International Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K also took place Sunday. More than 680 athletes were in Hilo for the races.

In the half marathon, Chris Gregory of Hilo finished first with a time of 1:19:03. Gregory ran at a 6:02 pace for the 13.1 miles. The first female finisher, Allie Olson of Arizona, crossed the line third overall at 1:27:21.
In the 5K, Adrian Charkowski of Hilo claimed first with a total time of 25:12. Amy Masuyama of Hilo finished in third overall and first for the women with a finishing time of 25:57.
