Herbert Hiroshi Okano, 89, and Jane Akiko Okano, 86, both of Keauhou, died March 13, 2013, at Kona Community and Maui Memorial hospitals, respectively.

Born Jan. 10, 1924, in Honalo, Herbert Okano was a retired high school teacher and counselor, a war veteran of the 100th Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team, member of the Kona Lions Club and Disabled American Veterans and a volunteer for the Democratic party. Born Sept. 12, 1926, in Honolulu, Jane Okano was a retired teacher and member of the Orchid Club. The Okanos were also Kona coffee and macadamia nut farmers and members of the Kona Daifukuji Soto Mission, Yamaguchi Kenjin Kai and Keauhou Kumiai.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. March 26 at Daifukuji Soto Mission in Honalo for an 11 a.m. dual service. Family requests aloha attire be worn.

The couple are survived by son, Darrell Okano of Keauhou; daughter, Laurie (James) Landowski of Kailua-Kona; two grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Herbert Okano is also survived by a brother, Takeshi (Betty) Okano of Belleair Bluffs, Fla.
