Middle school students at Innovations Public Charter School participate in fine arts and physical activity electives led by community mentors. These instructors provide students with opportunities to explore skills, concepts and application of the arts and athletics as well as offer insight into future careers. The community-school partnerships help students establish connections with the community in which they live.

Innovations students recently assisted with the annual West Hawaii Family Support Services Keiki Play and Learn Group’s annual Fitness Day event.

Keiki Play and Learn Group facilitator Craig Davis asked Dana Waite, co-owner of CrossFit Pohaku, to help out with Fitness Day. Waite, who also leads the CrossFit program for Innovations middle schoolers, seized the opportunity to bring her students to lead the preschoolers and their parents in a workout, teaching the 2- to 5-year-olds simple exercises and helping them through an obstacle course.
