The Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding its annual Hats Off event through Sunday to support its year-round disaster assistance efforts.
Through Sunday, volunteers will be collecting donations at Walmart Kona. On Saturday, KTA Kona, and Lanihau Center will also take part in the fundraising effort. Off-duty firefighters, along with volunteers from 4-H Federation, Lions Club, Walmart and Hualalai Academy will be collecting donations.

HAM radio enthusiasts meeting Sunday
The Kona Amateur Radio Society will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.

Kiran coming
to Hawaii Island
Kiran will share her approach to ending suffering and living in freedom during a series of upcoming speaking engagements in West Hawaii. With teachings in the same vein as Eckhart Tolle, she smashes myths about enlightenment and speaks about freedom as a presently attainable and available experience. She is the author of “Tools for Sanity: Freedom, Peace, and Fulfillment,” available in April.

Performance at Hulihee Palace slated Sunday
The Daughters of Hawaii and the Calabash Cousins present Afternoon at Hulihee at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hulihee Palace to remember Prince Kuhio and Queen Kaahumanu. The Merrie Monarchs will perform, accompanied by the Hulihee Palace Band. Bring a beach mat or chair; seating is not provided.

Sam Choy’s Poke Contest on Sunday
The second Sam Choy’s Keauhou Poke Contest is slated from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday on the Bay View Lawn at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay.
In addition to professional and amateur competition in traditional, spicy, cooked, soy sauce, nonseafood and sushi-style poke categories, the event features poke tasting, a celebrity cook-off at 11:30 a.m. and a 1:30 p.m. poke making demonstration by Choy. The event also features a Hawaii Island market and cultural demonstrations.
The $5 event admission benefits the $1 million Equip the Kitchens Campaign for the future Hawaii Community College at Palamanui.
A free shuttle will run between Keauhou Shopping Center, near Longs Drugs, and the resort from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m
Lanihau Cruise Night
to feature WHEA
Lanihau Center will host a Cruise Night from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the lot facing Palani Road. The event is open to all vehicles, from antiques to hot rods, classics, trucks and bikes. There is no entry or admission fee; the public is welcome.
Along with dozens of unique vehicles, the event will feature a display from the Explorations Foundation and the West Hawaii Explorations Academy. The nonprofit charter school will exhibit an artist’s rendering of its new campus, as well as student projects.
Door prizes will be presented by LAVA radio every half hour from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with prizes provided by Lanihau Center merchants and other local businesses.
Vehicles will parade around the parking lot at 7:30 p.m.
