MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC-Irvine 71, Hawaii 60: Michael Wilder scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and fourth-seeded UC Irvine put away Hawaii early to advance in the Big West Conference tournament on Thursday night.

UC Irvine (19-14), which has won seven of its past eight games, jumped out to a 24-5 lead midway through the first half and led by as many as 23 points before taking a 42-22 lead at halftime.

Hawaii battled back to begin the second half with a 20-8 run to cut the Anteaters’ lead to 52-42, but despite the rally, the Warriors never cut UC Irvine’s lead to single digits in the second half.

Hauns Brereton and Vander Joaquim scored 18 points apiece for fifth-seeded Hawaii (17-14).

UC Irvine will face top-seeded Long Beach State in the tournament semifinals on Friday. The Anteaters split the season series with Long Beach State, winning the last meeting on March 2, 72-69.

SOFTBALL

California 1, Hawaii 0: Jolene Henderson pitched a two-hit shutout, and Vanessa Alvarez’s two-out RBI double in the top of the second plated the game’s only run as the fourth-ranked Bears ended the Rainbow Wahine’s six-game winning streak.

Alvarez and Danielle Henderson both went 2-for-3 for the Bears (22-2) as Henderson struck out nine and walked only one in the contest.

Kaia Parnaby, who also pitched a complete game, suffered the loss for Hawaii (19-6). She gave up nine hits, striking out five and walking none.

Zarkovic earns national honor: University of Hawaii freshman outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic won another award on Tuesday when he was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men’s Division I-II National Player of the Week.

Zarkovic helped lead the Warriors to a two-match sweep of then-No. 13 USC. In the first match, Zarkovic tied a team high with 16 kills, hit a team-best .452 and also recorded 10 digs for his third double-double of the season. Zarkovic notched two of his four service aces in the deciding fifth set. In the rematch on Sunday, the freshman smashed another 12 kills on .400 hitting to go along with his seven digs.
