The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecast westerly winds of 45 mph to 70 mph with localized gusts topping 90 mph for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits above the 8,000-foot elevation. The strongest winds are expected later today.
A high wind warning means winds of at least 40 mph, or gusts of at least 60 mph, are forecast. Residents are urged to secure and protect property. Travel to the summit areas should be delayed until the winds subside. Winds this strong can make driving very dangerous, especially for high-profile vehicles.
