WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State-Fullerton 66, Hawaii 51: Four Titans scored in double figures as the Titans ousted the third-seeded Rainbow Wahine in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference women’s basketball tournament at Irvine, Calif.

Mya Oliver scored 17 points, Chante Miles chipped in with 13, Annie Park added 12 and Tailer Butler had 10 to lead eighth-seeded Cal State-Fullerton (11-21).

Kamilah Martin led Hawaii (17-13) with 15 points and 13 rebounds, but she was the lone Rainbow Wahine in double figures. Teammates Monica DeAngelis and Ashleigh Karaitiana each had nine points, and Shawna-Lei Kuehu added eight.

Former Hilo High standout Vicky Tagalicod played 16 minutes for Hawaii and didn’t score while ex-Kamehameha/Waiakea star Kanisha Bello played just two minutes and drained a 3-pointer.

Neither team shot well from the field, but the Titans held a big advantage at the free-throw line, making 17 of 23 while Hawaii was 4-of-7. The Rainbow Wahine also turned the ball over 22 times compared to Cal State-Fullerton’s 13.

SOFTBALL

Hawaii 1, Utah 0: Alyssa Villalpando’s one-out single down the third-base line plated Sharla Kliebenstein with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for the Rainbow Wahine (19-5) in Honolulu.

With the international tiebreaker in place, Kliebenstein began the inning at second base and advanced to third on Jazmine Zamora’s sacrifice bunt. Kliebenstein then scored when Villalpando hit a grounder that went off the third baseman’s glove and trickled into foul territory.

Kaia Parnaby (17-2) pitched a one-hit shutout, walking one and striking out eight.

Kayce Nieto (2-2) suffered the loss for Utah (13-8-1). She scattered three hits and walked none while striking out five.
