Chrystal Thomas Yamasaki, a licensed professional land surveyor with Wes Thomas Associates, will give a short presentation on the basics of land surveying in Hawaii from circa 1850 to 1920 on March 27.

The event is hosted by the Kona Krew chapter of Business Network International, which meets at Island Naturals on Kaiwi Street. The presentation starts at 7:45 a.m. and lasts until 9:15 a.m. Visitors are welcome to attend the free event.

Kealakekua family
wins KTA Oahu fly-away

Kealakekua residents Alfred Carvalho and his daughter, Kawena, recently accepted KTA Super Stores’ “Oahu Fantasy Fly-Away” grand prize.

Carvalho was selected from an in-store sweepstakes that ran Jan. 2 to Feb. 12, coinciding with the launch of KTA’s Score for Scholarships Program. Carvalho and his family will fly round-trip to Oahu where they will enjoy a three-night stay at Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa, a $500 shopping spree at Ala Moana Center, rental car and admission to Hawaii’s only water park, Wet ‘N’ Wild Hawaii.

KTA Super Stores’ Score for Scholarships program awards funds to University of Hawaii at Hilo student athletes based on their performance in the following sports: men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, baseball, softball and women’s volleyball.

Aughe promoted
to GM at Hata & Co.

Ted Aughe has been promoted to general manager of the Y. Hata & Co. Ltd.’s Hilo branch, where he will manage all operations. He previously was an account manager with the company servicing the Hilo area and has been with the company since 2007.

The company recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary and its expanding business on the Big Island has led to the creation of this new position.

Hope Lodge Hawaii receives donation

Alexander & Baldwin Inc. has donated $25,000 to the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge Hawaii capital campaign to help cancer patients and their caregivers with a free place to stay while in Honolulu for treatment.

“This gift from Alexander & Baldwin makes it possible for cancer patients coming to Honolulu for treatment to concentrate on beating their cancer, instead of worrying about paying for lodging,” says Jackie Young, chief staff officer, American Cancer Society Hawaii Pacific. The American Cancer Society’s Clarence T. C. Ching Hope Lodge Hawaii is a place where cancer patients and their caregivers can find help and hope. Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free, temporary place to stay.

Walmart now has solar

Walmart and SunEdison have completed solar power installations at Walmart stores in Kahului, Maui, Kailua-Kona and Kapolei, Oahu, doubling the total number of stores in Hawaii powered by renewable solar energy. Similar installations are already in operation atop the Honolulu Sam’s Club and Mililani Walmart on Oahu, and the Lihue Walmart on Kauai.

During the first year, the 311 kilowatt solar power rooftop system on each store will produce more than 400,000 kilowatt hours of solar electricity.

First Insurance’s
rating upgraded

A.M. Best Co., a global credit rating agency serving the financial and health care service industries, has upgraded its financial strength rating for First Insurance Co. of Hawaii to A+ from A. The firm now has the highest rating among Hawaii-based property and casualty insurance carriers.

A.M. Best highlighted the company’s long-term financial performance, conservative reserving and local market presence as reasons for the upgrade, as well as the operational and financial support the company gained as a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance since 2011.
