Zee Knapp led Kealakehe Elementary School third-graders in an iTeam Invention Workshop held recently at the Kailua-Kona school.

Knapp and husband, Ernie, used William Kamkwamba’s book, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” as motivation for the students to design their own windmills. The “scientist in the community” helped mentor students with their creations.

The iTeam program gives children the opportunity to use their curiosity and excitement to invent new creation. The events are free and for children between ages 8 and 18.

McDonald’s donated straws, Starbucks gave coffee stirrers and members of the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union Marketing Department served as mentors.
