MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Hawaii def. USC 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9: The University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team earned a second straight five-set win over Southern California on Sunday to complete a two-match sweep.
The Warriors (7-12, 6-10 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) were led by JP Marks, who had 22 kills and nine digs. He had a .444 hitting percentage. Sinisa Zarkovis recorded 12 kills, and Brook Sedore added 11 kills and eight digs.
As a team, Hawaii outhit the Trojans (4-11, 4-11) .391 to .176.
Micah Christenson led USC with 49 assists. Joey Booth had 19 kills, Alex Slaught added 13 and Tanner Jansen recorded 11.
Hawaii held a 2-1 lead after the third set, but USC fought back for a narrow win in the fourth to force the decisive fifth set. JP Marks’ service error on set point ended the set.
But Hawaii moved in front in the final set with a 5-1 run to turn a 4-3 deficit into an 8-5 lead. The Trojans helped out, committing three attack errors in the stretch. Zarkovic had a kill, and Sedore had his only ace. Hawaii had only three aces in the match, compared to nine for USC.
