Lia Galdeira scored 17 points, and Dawnyelle Awa had 10, including 6 of 6 free throws, to lift eighth-seeded Washington State University to a 48-41 win over ninth-seeded Arizona State in the first round of the Pac 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament Thursday at Seattle’s KeyArena.
Galdeira and Awa, who led Konawaena to three Hawaii High School Athletic Association state titles over four years, are freshmen for the Cougars (10-19), who will play top-seeded Stanford at 3 p.m. today in the quarterfinals at Seattle.
Galdeira hit 7 of 15 field goals, including 2 of 3 3-pointers, and 1 of 3 free throws against Arizona State (13-17). She also had five rebounds.
Awa made 2 of 7 field goals but was deadly from the free-throw line.
