MEN’S BASKETBALL

In a nutshell: Hawaii will close the Big West regular season at 5:30 p.m. today, when the Warriors play at Cal State-Northridge (13-17, 4-13). In the previous meeting between the teams, Hawaii earned a 74-71 victory at Stan Sheriff Center on Dec. 29, with Christian Standhardinger and Isaac Fotu scoring 17 and 16 points, respectively … The Warriors dropped from a tie for third place to fifth place in the Big West after a 64-61 loss to Cal Poly on Saturday at Stan Sheriff Center. … With just two games separating second-place Pacific (11-5) and sixth-place UC-Davis, Hawaii can finish as high as second and as low as sixth in the conference. … The Big West tournament begins March 14 with four quarterfinal matchups. The semifinals are scheduled for the following day and the championship game set for March 16. All games will take place at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

In a nutshell: Hawaii enters today’s home contest against last-place UC-Riverside (11-16, 4-12) in third place in the Big West standings — a full game behind Cal Poly (18-9, 12-4) and 1 1/2 games behind Pacific (23-6, 13-4). … The Rainbow Wahine have won four of their past five games, including a 69-60 win over Cal State-Northridge on Saturday. Kamilah Martin scored 15 points, Sydney Haydel added 13, and Shawna-Lei Kuehu and Ashley Karaitiana had 12 apiece for Hawaii, which went 24-of-28 from the free-throw line and outrebounded Cal State-Northridge 34-26. … In the last meeting between the teams, the Rainbow Wahine beat the Highlanders 65-50 on the road Jan. 5. Kuehu scored 14 points, and Martin had 13 for Hawaii, which forced 20 turnovers in the contest.

In a nutshell: The Rainbow Wahine dropped one spot in the USA Today/NFCA coaches poll to No. 21 after going 4-1 at last week’s Bank of Hawaii Invitational. Hawaii lost to Memphis 5-0 on Saturday in round-robin play but beat the Tigers 5-1 in the tournament semifinals the next day before beating Western Kentucky 3-0 in the championship game. … Kelly Majam earned Most Valuable Player honors, hitting .412 with two doubles, a triple and two home runs. One of the two home runs, a solo shot against Memphis, was Majam’s 60th career homer. … Kaia Parnaby, who went 5-0 last week, improved to 11-2 with a 1.28 ERA. In 92 2/3 innings, she has struck out 108 batters and walked just 13. … The round-robin Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament begins today in Honolulu. Hawaii will play three games against Portland State (5-15) and two apiece against East Carolina (8-11) and the Tokyo Women’s College of Physical Education. Mililani High alum Kristi Oshiro leads ECU in batting (.464), hits (26), runs (19), doubles (six) and triples (four).
