Halemaumau Trail cleanup times scheduled
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has launched “Stewardship at the Summit,” a volunteer project to restore native Hawaiian forest surrounding the park’s historic Halemaumau Trail.
Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon today, March 15 and 23. They should meet project leaders Paul and Jane Field at the Kilauea Visitor Center, and wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Bring a hat, rain gear, garden gloves, day pack, snacks and water. Tools will be provided. No advance registration is required; there is no cost to participate, but park entrance fees apply.
The trail has been used since 1864, when guests at the Volcano House hotel used it to hike into Kilauea Caldera. A section leading across the caldera floor to Halemaumau Crater is closed, but much of the trail remains open.
