Waimea community meeting Thursday

Waimea community meeting Thursday

Historical video footage of World War II military training that occurred in the former Waikoloa Maneuver Area, which encompasses a large portion of Waimea, all of Waikoloa and the coastline, is part of a new safety video that will be shown by the Army Corps of Engineers during the 5:15 p.m. Thursday Waimea Community Association town meeting in Waimea School cafeteria.

Topping the agenda will be an update on the federally funded cleanup of unexploded ordnance by the corps and its local contractor, Environet. Also on the agenda will be an update about the transport of eucalyptus logs from the Hamakua Coast to a Kawaihae log yard; next steps for the Palamanui community college campus and a recap on the status of several key Legislative bills supported by the Waimea/North Hawaii community.

Those attending are asked to bring a donation — preferably cash or a check — or nonperishable food items for the Waimea food pantries.

For more information, call Sherman Warner at 885-1725 or visit waimeatown.org.

Habitat for Humanity recruiting volunteers

Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii is recruiting volunteers for a home build in Ocean View scheduled for June.

“We built four homes in Ocean View and look forward to our next build — our first veteran build. We will need the support of the community — skilled volunteers, unskilled volunteers, churches, service groups and lunch sponsors — to make it a reality for our new partner family,” said Margo Takata, community relations director.

To volunteer, call 331-8010 or visit habitatwesthawaii.org.
