A free public opening reception, slated from 5 to 7 p.m. today, includes entertainment and light refreshments. The exhibit features turnings from members islandwide and also includes a silent auction and professional critique.

Demonstrations are planned between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturdays. John Mydock will demonstrate his wood-burning skills, and Doug Leite will explain how to get started in basic bowl turning this weekend. A competition is planned March 9, challenging contestants to turn the thinnest bowl they can in 30 minutes. Activities March 16 include Doug Keown explaining the basket weave technique and Dennis Hakes demonstrating his wavy Norfolk pine bowl process.
The Big Island Woodturners Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating its members and the public about woodturning. There are no dues to pay; the only membership requirement is participation.
The center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; from noon to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. For more information, call 933-0416 or email wailoa@yahoo.com.
