The Donkey Mill Art Center, 76-6670 Mamalahoa Highway, Holualoa, will offer a painting workshop with Big Island artist Rose Adare from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 8, 9 and 10. Tuition for the three-day workshop is $250, plus an additional $10 supply fee.

Adare’s “Restraint and Revolution” series is on display at the J+ Gallery in Holualoa through March 10. The series marks Adare’s Bohemian portrait debut/ It captures the new vanguards of counter-culture through evocative brush strokes celebrating the dynamic lifestyles of her subjects by tying the classical traditions of oil painting to their unconventional lives. Workshop participants will explore the concept of “illumination” in painting by understanding the physical properties of light reflecting from the white of the canvas through layers of oil paint to achieve that inner glow. Adare will also apply gold leaf to enhance the play of light.

Adare will give a free artist talk from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the J+ Gallery, 76-5892 Mamalahoa Highway. She will share details of the subjects within the paintings and discuss her technical process.
