STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Jermaine Marshall scored 25 points, and Penn State upset No. 4 Michigan 84-78 on Wednesday night for its first Big Ten victory in more than a year.

The Nittany Lions (9-18, 1-14) had lost 18 straight regular-season conference games dating to last season, but they roared back from a 15-point deficit with 10:39 left behind the energetic play of Marshall. The junior guard scored 19 in the second half, including four 3s that whipped the Jordan Center fans into a frenzy.

D.J. Newbill added 17 points for Penn State, which hit a season-high 10 3-pointers. Marshall’s twisting drive to the basket gave the Nittany Lions a three-point lead before Michigan’s Glenn Robinson III misfired on a 3 with 17 seconds left.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 19 points for the Wolverines (23-5, 10-5). All five of Michigan’s losses have come on the road in the Big Ten.

It was Penn State’s first win over a top five team since defeating No. 5 North Carolina 82-74 in the second round of the 2001 NCAA tournament. Penn State also got its first conference win since beating Iowa 69-64 on Feb. 16, 2012.

No. 5 MIAMI 76,

VIRGINIA TECH 58

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Miami went 11 minutes without a basket, then finally shook a 10-day scoring slump and pulled away from Virginia Tech.

Shane Larkin had 22 points and six assists to lead the Hurricanes, who were coming off a loss at Wake Forest that ended their 14-game winning streak and their bid to go unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Despite a slow start, Miami (23-4, 14-1) never trailed and improved to 13-0 at home. The Hurricanes hold a 2½-game edge over second-place Duke in the ACC and can clinch their first conference basketball championship by beating the Blue Devils on Saturday.

Virginia Tech (12-16, 3-12) fell deeper into last place in the league. Erick Green, the nation’s leading scorer at 25.2 points per game, took a painful spill in the first half and scored only 16 — just the third time this season he has been held below 20.

No. 7 GEORGETOWN 79,

CONNECTICUT 78, 2 OT

STORRS, Conn. — Otto Porter Jr.’s layup with 9.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime gave Georgetown a wild victory over Connecticut, the Hoyas’ 10th straight win and first-ever at Gampel Pavilion.

In the final 2:03 of the second overtime Georgetown overcame a seven-point deficit, improving to 1-3 in Connecticut’s 23-year-old on-campus arena.
