Kindergarten enrollment begins
Parents are encouraged to register their children for kindergarten or junior kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year. Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, may enroll in regular kindergarten, while children who reach 5 years of age between Aug. 2 and Dec. 31 may enroll in junior kindergarten. Kindergarten is not mandatory in Hawaii.
All parents are encouraged to register their children for the full-day classes at their neighborhood schools. Parents can call their district office to determine which school their child should attend.
Hawaii Island District numbers are Hilo, Waiakea, 974-6600; Ka‘u, Keaau, Pahoa, 982-4719; and West Hawaii, 327-4991.

Alcohol Logo Lampoon Contest open to
N. Hawaii youth
Waimea’s Friday Night Crew youth group presents its Alcohol Logo Lampoon Contest, open to all North Hawaii youth in grades 6 to 12. The group will host a poster making party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Waimea Community Center; all are encouraged to attend.
Entries will be judged by the “deceptiveness/false information” in alcohol advertising, creativity, imagination or humor and neatness, presentation and overall appearance, with divisions for grades 6 to 8 and 9 to 12. Posters may be dropped off between 4 and 6 p.m. March 11 at Mama’s House, adjacent to NAPA Auto. Waimea Middle School students may submit posters until March 12 in the school office.

WHEA to host community fair
West Hawaii Explorations Academy will host a community fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at its campus located at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. The event is free; donations of nonperishable items for the Hawaii Food Basket will be accepted.
The event will feature entertainment, a silent auction, games, activities and a food booth. Sixth-graders will also present “Hamlet” during the fair. Campus tours will showcase student projects; seahorses, clown fish, the shark tank and reef tank will be featured.

Kealakehe Intermediate council meets Tuesday
Kealakehe Intermediate parents and concerned community members are invited to a School Community Council meeting slated for 5 p.m. Tuesday in the school library workroom. Bring questions, ideas, suggestions and concerns.
Kumu Gaspar, a discussion of the school’s academic plan and suggestions and feedback on school bylaws are on the agenda.
Kealakehe High public hearing slated Tuesday
Kealakehe High’s School Community Council will host its annual public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school’s library. The public may use this opportunity to voice comments or propose changes to school policies or procedures for the upcoming school year.
The format will allow testimony to agenda items first, then those wishing to address additional items will be allowed to speak. Agenda items include discussion of the electronic use policy, standardized dress code and the school’s early release policy.
Testimony will be limited to two minutes per person or group represented by a speaker; there will be no discussion. Written testimony will be accepted prior to the meeting via email to khparentcenter@yahoo.com or fax to 327-4307, Attn: Parent-Community Center.
