Island police are investigating the death of an infant as a coroner’s inquest.
Kona patrol officers responded at 5:44 a.m. Monday to a home on Mamalahoa Highway in Holualoa to a report of an unresponsive baby girl. When they arrived, the child’s mother reported she had found her 2-month-old baby in bed unresponsive, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
The mother had called 911 and had been instructed to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Fire Department rescue personnel arrived. Fire Department personnel then continued resuscitation efforts and took the baby to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:22 a.m.
Police do not suspect foul play and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
