A winter storm warning remains in effect for the Big Island summits through 6 p.m. Saturday. Mauna Kea Access Road is currently closed to the public.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecast 6 inches to 1 foot of snow possible for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits above 10,500 feet. Northeasterly winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts reaching 30 mph are forecast for the areas.
The service also noted that roads may become impassable. Visibility will also be limited to less than 1 mile in areas.
A winter storm warning means that a significant amount of snow, sleet or ice accumulation is expected or occurring, according to the service. Travel may be hazardous or impossible.
