John Mydock won the turning category with his “Tangerine Dreams,” a Norfolk pine bowl with gold leaf and a mirror-like, orange accented finish.
The winner in the sculpture category was Craig Nichols for his whale shark, “Ancient Mariner.”
Peter Ziroli took top honors in joinery for his dining table in koa, milo, longan and cocobolo. The table is a reproduction of one built in the 1850s by Wilhelm Fischer of Honolulu and featured in Irving Jenkins’ “Hawaii’s Furniture and Hawaiian Cabinetmakers.”
The open category was won by Jerry Benson, with his “Freeform Table,” a mango slab coffee table with a natural shape, carved and joined, and finished with resin similar ones used on surfboards.
Correy Smith received the most votes overall to win best of show for his “Chadansu” Japanese tea cabinet, crafted using hand tools and no sandpaper. The cabinet and drawer faces are made from curly koa, the dove-tailed drawer sides are Portuguese cypress and the bottoms are Port Orford cedar. The panel faces are made from curly sugi pine and the back is finished in koa panels. The handles were forged by a master craftsman in Japan, then fitted to the piece by Smith. Surfaces were planed with a with a Japanese kanna, and the mirror-smooth surface and appearance was created with multiple layers of German shellac.
Kohala Watershed Partnership will benefit with a donation of more than $7,600 from this show. The long-term goal of the Kohala Watershed Partnership is to restore Pelekane Bay by eliminating the siltation from runoff.
